I am careful to try keep any politics or being on any ‘side’ out of the Global Peace Index support FB page. I typically advocate condemning both sides in any conflict.
However, the current missile strikes on civilian infrastructure right now by the Russian Federation are a war crime and thus a violation of our sensibilities in this group that supports the Global Peace Index.
To be clear about how apolitical we are the president of Ukraine could also right now call for peace talks and I hold him as responsible for not doing this as much as I oppose Russian attacks on civilians.
People don’t fight wars. Soldiers do. Today in modern warfare, since the Geneva convention we try to keep wars away from civilian centers. Sort of.
But life is not that simple or easy, cities are hubs for infrastructure, they have strategic importance. Armies want to establish control over them.
Then chaos ensues. I mean lawless anarchy and evil butchery and dehumanizing of our fellows is encouraged by Russian commanders.
At times we forget about this part, when a city in Ukraine has been invaded its police force is then gone. If you dial for emergency police help no one answers.
So young infantrymen loot houses, rob the elderly who couldn’t relocate and worse rape of young families who also could not evacuate for some reason.
Beyond murder, rape and torture are the worst faces of war.
Russia is not alone, the current wars in Yemen and Ethiopia deserve scrutiny of both sides in the conflict, and neither side has tried to adhere to the Geneva conventions.
But the Genva conventions, perhaps even the outcome of this war on Ukraine by Russia may hold some hope.
International laws could be passed to solidify the Geneva convention protocols going forward, ie civilians and war don’t mix.
That would be a nice start to peace on Earth…
There was an ancient idea to let two tribal chiefs fight it out and save their peoples from warring…
Perhaps insisting those who want to be at war do it away from those who don’t want to be at war would be a start.
In other words, if your going to insist in trying to be in a conflict, go do it over there with others who also want to play soldier.
Is it glory for a warrior or self-gratification, I wonder…
