What is Greatness

August 2, 2021

How Ivan Fernandez reacted towards Abel Mutai in the Burlada cross country race was great.

Long story short when Abel was 100m from the finish line he arrived in a stadium to cheers – and thought he’d won so stopped running.

Ivan was 900m behind and seen this. His rival had stopped short of the finish while in a clear lead thinking he’d completed the race.

He shouted him but Abel was from Kenya and had never heard a word of Spanish. When Ivan caught up to Abel he encouraged him over the finish line ahead of him to take first place.

When challenged on his behaviour and not just winning as he could have, he replied to the reporter saying “How would I look at my mother wearing that medal, knowing what she knew.” and it kind of ended the chat.

Would you take advantage in a way to sneak a win? Most actually would.

That’s why being able to not do it is what it means to be truly great.

Carry your own worth but with enough grace to see when another outshines you.

Be of oneself but not to the exclusion of others.

Imagine if Trump became pals with Biden and said lets MAGA?

That would be great.
