2020: The Year of the Mask and Dreams Vs Illusions Vs Delusions

December 28, 2020

2020 has been a good year for self-reflection for us all.

Wikipedia defines delusion as: “A delusion is a fixed belief that is not amenable to change in light of conflicting evidence.”

Most would agree dreams, illusions and delusions are cousins of the mind. But at what point does an ambitious person with a wholesome dream become a pathological lunatic with delusions of grandeur?

I think none other than the President of the USA has been the best banner bearer for us to show one and all who has a grip on reality and who does not.

And therein lies the answer: A grip on reality vs delusions of grandeur.

Its got to the point Trump is a bug bear for satarical comics, they can’t satire Trump. Anything they come out with as gags are outdated by Trump himself, preemptively.

Give Trump this, I love dry cynical humour on SNL but when Trump out does their best efforts, in the ‘real’ world, in real time live on twitter

… He’s blown the lid on reality TV, this is reality ‘reality’ now. aka Delusional.

My reality vs everyone elses reality – who’s with me? Thats the stuff that personality cults and religious fanatics are made of.

Remember its the United States of America not the Grand Empire of Trump, ok?

We need illusions though, we all tell one another ‘everything will be ok’ as we all make our march through life to our graves. Its a cycnical look but its been that kind of year.

Illusions help us through the tough, we visulize a better future in our minds and pin some hope on to that illusion.

Its how religions make us better able to deal with lifes hiccups and storms. Its how a marathon runner finishes a race. Its how we get our first jab or get through giving birth – we use our illusions.

Dreams are the strength of humanity. Delusions are their betrayal.

Walk the line, it a fine one on the sharp edge of the sword.

Or at least break your illusions some to.

Realities not that bad.
