I was born in ’77. Ten years after the Cuban Missile crisis. I was 22 when the Cold War had thawed enough to allow Germany to unite after WWII and so the Berlin wall could come down on the 15th of Nov 1989.
WWII was brewed for the world in Europe in 1939 when the world had a population of 2.3 billion. It now has a population of 7.5 billion. 80 years later.
But over the last 42 years the Cold War and The Troubles have been left behind.
Then in 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. I remember watching the telly on New Years eve in ’89. Loads of stuff about pop stars and Princess Diana and then it ended with the Berlin Wall coming down. I wasn’t sure why it brought a tear to my 12 year old eyes but it just did.
The Troubles ended up resolved enough for most to get on and the EU was formed.
It did really seem like the world was coming together as one.
The 2000s seemed fun with the smart phone rocking up. Ended off badly with a recession in 2008.
Now 2020 and we’ve just had a face off with WWIII?! Wtf!
Far right marches in Spain today.
Poland putting its EU membership in jeopardy to have the executive branch have power over the judicial branch. If you do not feel alarmed by that happening in 2020 read up on some books on modern governments.
The advent for the smart phone arguably made the Arab Spring possible until the powers that be switched off the internet. But while it took some steam it seemed to have a noble idea before it died.
