The Good News About People in General

My pregnant little sister was once on a train on xmas eve that ‘broke down’. Snow on the line. She was 8 months on and the train had 100s of football supporters on board and the trains Engineer ordered the bar open for free and with it being xmas eve and late the boys did what the boys will do. They bottomed up and some became boisterous.

Men + beer = boisterous.

The hold up lasted for nearly 2 hours but an extraordinary thing happened which I believe belies some of the beauty of humanity.

The carriage my sister was in just divided into male and female. The boys were drinking in the back section being a bit rowdy while the women surrounded my sister and just attended to her every need while they quietly sipped a little wine or not. Even the girlfriends of the football supporters left them and sat by my sister.

But if she wanted a roll, a lad got sent to the bar for it.

If she wanted the guys to quiet down some they were told.

If she needed a glass of water she never had to ask. It was just provided.

If she needed the loo she was put at the front of the queue. She’d offered to wait in the queue and was told ‘Dinny be silly’ by all the women and boisterous lads.

When the mood got high and the boys started singing a football song and got quite into it, all the women close to my sister just gathered around her and soothed her.

She was the most protected and looked after person in the world during those 2 hours.

She also mentioned another point about this event which I think is the cherry on the cake.

Whenever one of the boisterous boys had to pass the women to go to the loo they did one of two things, they either gave my sister just a quiet nod as they walked by. She said she felt care in their look. Or gave her a gentle congrats. With honest love on their face.

Everyone knew the script and all were happy and safe.

If anyone had tried to hurt my sister during that trip they would have had 10 almost drunk men to get through first!

Then the 10 women.

She arrived with a happy tear in her eye on xmas at 12:30am.

We got her home to bed safely.

Through a wee bit of snow.

With hot choco and surrounded by family.

“Something extraordinary at LAX today… (writing this on the plane). I was at the gate, waiting to get on my plane to Portland. Flights to two different cities were boarding on either side of the Portland fight. A toddler who looked to be eighteen or so months old was having a total meltdown, running between the seats, kicking and screaming, then lying on the ground, refusing to board the plane (which was not going to Portland). His young mom, who was clearly pregnant and traveling alone with her son, became completely overwhelmed… she couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset, he kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again. The mother finally sat down on the floor and put her head in her hands, with her kid next to her still having a meltdown, and started crying.

 Then, this gorgeous thing (I’m crying just writing this)… the women in the terminal, there must have been six or seven of us, not women who knew each other, approached and surrounded her and the little boy and we knelt down and formed a circle around them. I sang ‘The Itsy Bitsy Spider’ to the little boy… one woman had an orange that she peeled, one woman had a little toy in her bag that she let the toddler play with, another woman gave the mom a bottle of water. Someone else helped the mom get the kid’s sippy cup out of her bag and give it to him. It was so gorgeous, there was no discussion and no one knew anyone else, but we were able to calm them both down, and she got her child on the plane. Only women approached.

 

After they went through the door we all went back to our separate seats and didn’t talk about it… we were strangers, gathering to solve something. It occurred to me that a circle of women, with a mission, can save the world. I will never forget that moment.”

    1. Thank you. It’s the teseracht theme used by wordpress. It’s a decent gradient to get from blogger to webdesigner I reckon.
